In its own way, each edition of documenta has steered international conversations about art. Every five years, Kassel’s “Museum of 100 Days,” as documenta is often called, welcomes thousands of artists and cultural professionals as well as millions of worldwide visitors. documenta hasbecome a seismograph for international contemporary art and its engagement with current social issues. 

documenta was founded by Arnold Bode since 1955. Since then, the exhibition has displayed modern and contemporary art every five (initially every four) years. 

The documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH is a non-profit organization supported and funded by the City of Kassel and the State of Hesse as shareholders. The organization is responsible for the documenta exhibition, which takes place every five years, as well as the Fridericianum, the documenta archiv, the documenta Institut, and the documenta Halle. 

DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN will take place from June 12 to September 19, 2027. Each documenta exhibition lasts 100 days.

The sixteenth edition of documenta is taking place in Kassel.

The Artistic Director of DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN is Naomi Beckwith. She is Deputy Director and Jennifer and David Stockman Chief Curator at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and Foundation in New York. Previously, she held curatorial positions at the MCA Chicago and the Studio Museum in Harlem. She is a graduate of the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and has co-organized numerous prestigious exhibitions and monographic projects.

Tickets are available in the DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN online shop and at various advance ticket offices in Kassel, including the Fridericianum and the store of Kassel Marketing on Wilhelmstraße in Kassel. Additional ticket outlets will be announced.

The following tickets are available for visits during the exhibition duration from June 12 to September 19, 2027. Tickets are valid for all DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN exhibition locations.

Children up to twelve years and users of a solidarity ticket

Children, students, trainees, recipients of basic social security benefits (e.g. ALG II or supplementary pension benefits), Federal Volunteer Service personnel or FSJ, refugees, and asylum seekers.

Visitors with disabilities and different abilities who are accompanied by a support person may bring that person to the exhibition free of charge. Visitors with different abilities, which significantly compromise their visit (50%), receive reduced admission by presenting appropriate certification. The Teilhabecard will replace official certificates in conjunction with valid identification.

Discounted class tickets available on our online shop are recommended for school visits.

Our Accessibility Card facilitates access to the exhibition and reduces waiting times on site. It is intended for visitors who cannot stand for extended periods or wait in crowded areas. The card is available at the Welcome Center upon presentation of appropriate documentation.

A solidarity ticket is based on the principle of solidarity. By purchasing one, you help provide free admission to another visitor to DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN.

Solidarity tickets are available throughout the exhibition period. No special authorization is required to receive a solidarity ticket.

The availability of solidarity tickets depends on the number of solidarity tickets purchased. A solidarity ticket cannot be guaranteed.

Yes, schools can register on the Startchancen website. DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN programs will be made available online and updated throughout the exhibition. Please visit the website for more information.

Yes, tickets are transferable, with the exception of season tickets. For more information, please refer to Tickettoaster's Terms and Conditions.

Yes, one-day and two-day tickets can be validated on site from June 12 to September 19, 2027. The 2-day ticket is valid for two consecutive days once validated.

The 2-day ticket is valid for two consecutive days. You can choose the first day freely.

Tickets for DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN, with the exception fo the season ticket,, also include free travel on local public transportation in the KasselPlus area. Travel is free until the end of service on the day the ticket is valid.

Season ticket holders can purchase discounted MultiTickets at NVV ticket machines and advance sales locations throughout the exhibition.

No. Since our regular tickets can be used on any date, they are also a great gift.

Free tickets are not provided. Teachers can refer to the school class option for 7 euros.

In general, purchased tickets cannot be refunded. For more information, please refer to tickettoaster's Terms and Conditions.

You are responsible for any lost physical tickets. For personalized season tickets, please check with the Lost and Found office or our shops. A replacement fee may apply if the season ticket needs to be reissued by our ticketing provider, Tickettoaster.

DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN regularly offers accessible programs in German Sign Language and International Sign Language for individuals and groups. Additional accessible programs will follow. Questions regarding accessible programs can be sent via email to service@documenta.de.

All DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN exhibition tours begin at the Welcome Center, located at Friedrichsplatz 20 in Kassel.

To book a customized exhibition tour for one or more groups, please visit the Exhibition Tours page. The maximum number of participants is 15 per group.

Exhibition walks can be purchased at service@documenta.de and through our ticket hotline at +49 561 4739-6415 (available daily from 10:00AM to 6:00PM).

Up to 15 people can participate in an exhibition walk. This group size cannot be exceeded under any circumstances. Larger groups will be split into several exhibition walks which can be booked here. Should you have any questions, you can contact us at service@documenta.de.

Groups that purchase 11 or more tickets receive a 10% discount per ticket. This does not apply to school class tickets.

Yes, tickets for the exhibition can be combined with tickets for guided tours at a later time.

Yes, guided tours and programs led by trained staff, along with international art educators and artists, are offered for school groups.

You can book the school group ticket for 7 euros per student or teacher through our online shop. 

Friends' Associations of Museums and art associations have the option of organizing their own exhibition walk after registering and paying a license fee.

Tour operators are excluded from this option and can book their own regular exhibition tour. You can book licensed tours in the online shop.

Visitors with disabilities who require support may bring their accompanying person along on the exhibition tour free of charge.

A maximum of 15 people can take part in an exhibition tour for groups. If fewer people participate in the tour than you specified, you do not need to inform us. The price of 180 euros is fixed regardless of size. If the group exceeds a maximum of 15 people, you can book additional guided tours through x:hibit (email: service@documenta.de, service hotline: +49 561 4739-6415) or alternatively book individual places for the extra guests.

The regular opening hours are from 10:00AM–8:00PM daily. Event times may vary from this.

DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN will take place at various locations throughout the city of Kassel. Exhibition venues will be made accessible so that visitors can visit them with as few barriers as possible. You can find more information on accessibility here. 

Animals are not permitted in the exhibition buildings. Assistance dogs are an exception.

Photography for personal use is permitted without a flash. Flash photography, tripods, filming and similar activities are not permitted in the exhibition. Commercial photography and video recording require prior authorization. Please contact the press office for further information at (press@documenta.de).

A guidance system and site plan for DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN will help visitors find their way around the exhibition. The site plan will be available free of charge online and in print.

If you’re traveling by car, we recommend using Park & Ride parking lots and continuing your journey by public transportation. You can find Park & Ride parking lots on the Visit Kassel website.
You can offer and find rides to Kassel via the BlaBlaCar platform.
From the north or east: A7 / Kassel-Nord exit
From the south: A49 / Kassel-Auestadion exit
From the west: A44 / take the A49 at Südkreuz / Kassel-Auestadion exit

From Kassel-Calden Airport
Take bus 100 or a taxi to downtown Kassel. Taxi: +49 561 881 11, Minicar: +49 561 811 081.

From Frankfurt Airport
Direct connection via Deutsche Bahn (ICE) to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. You can find information on departure times and tickets here.

From Hannover Airport
Take the S-Bahn to Hannover Central Station, then take the ICE to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Information on departure times and tickets can be found here.

From Paderborn-Lippstadt Airport
Take the regional train to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe. Information on departure times and tickets can be found here.

Public Transportation

From the Kassel Wilhelmshöhe train station, take Line 1 toward “Vellmar,” Line 3 toward “Ihringshäuser Straße,” or Line 4 toward “Hessisch Lichtenau” to “Friedrichsplatz.”
All event venues are expected to be accessible by tram or bus. DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN tickets, with the exception of the season ticket, are also valid as transit tickets for public transportation throughout the KasselPlus area. Visitors can use public transportation free of charge until the end of service on the day their ticket is valid.

Take lines 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 8 to the “Friedrichsplatz” stop. There you’ll find the central Welcome Center of DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN.

Bike

You can rent bikes at affordable rates at several stations throughout the city through the nextbike bike-sharing system.
Instructions on how to rent a bike, as well as a map showing the nextbike stations, can be found on the City of Kassel’s website.
Several bike parking spaces are available right in front of the Fridericianum.

The Schulausflugsticket is available for elementary and secondary school classes at schools in Hesse. This ticket entitles school classes and two supervisors to free travel as part of field trips during the school year. You can find more information here.

All public schools in Hesse also have the option of using KulturBus to visit cultural events such as DOCUMENTA SIXTEEN. The cost of using the bus is covered by the State of Hesse. You can find more information here.
